Bowhunting Trophy Blacktail
Slowly….we inch closer and closer to Nov. 21st, opening day of Oregon’s late archery season. Stands have been hung and trail cameras have been working overtime.
To me, this hunt supersedes all others. The blacktail deer was the big game animal I first hunted and the only animal I could afford to pursue as a kid. The best part, as a teenager I could walk out the front door of our house and basically start hunting. Been hunting them for 27 years now. Me and my brother, Pete, shared many hunts for blacktail deer learning the ropes as new bowhunters. And, I helped my little brother Taylor tag his first three bucks I think it was when he was 12, 13 and 14. If I remember right, his very first buck was a monster 5×4. Awesome buck!!!
Of course me and Big Roy talked blacktail strategy, built homemade tree stands, scouted and tagged a few bucks together before he headed to the North Country. But the guy who I have shared the most awesome blacktail experiences with over the years is long time friend Chad Montgomery. For many seasons straight back in the 90’s he knocked down some smoker bucks. He surely was a better big buck hunter than I was and probably still is. One season, back in 1994, we both drew extra 600 series deer tags and killed bucks with our bows during rifle season. We also killed good bucks during archery season that year. A sweet double double. Chad hasn’t bowhunted in a number of years but his love for big blacktail bucks has never waned. He and I still team up every season to hang stands together, he checks the trail cameras when I am off on out of state hunts and for the last three seasons he mans a tree stand right next to mine and captures our pursuit of trophy blacktail on film. Our dream is to make a Bowhunting Trophy Blacktail video together and I think we are getting pretty close.
Big blacktail bucks….to me, there is nothing like them. Keep hunting hard guys, Cam
